The concept of imagination in al-Farabi and Avicenna

Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā's views on imagination is an important topic of discussion that includes many areas such as psychology, epistemology, prophethood, politics and contributes to philosophical accumulation. In this study, the ideas of the ancient Greek philosophers on phantasia and the explanations of the imagination of Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā were explained comparatively and the differences, changes and innovations revealed by Islamic philosophers on this subject were mentioned. The explanations of Al-Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā regarding the competence of imagination are discussed in four stages: (a) The influence of ancient Greek philosophers on the conceptual adventure of the concept of imagination in the philosophical literature and the pursuit of the formal-semantic transformation of phantasia in the translation to Islamic philosophy in translated works (b) The physiology of imagination in the context of the nafs theory of Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā (c) The relationship between the mind-imagination abilities under the influence of al-'aql al-faāl on human beings and the external influence of the universal-particular content and the imitation function of the imagination in acceptance (d) The connection between prophethood and the difference in the functions of imagination according to states such as sleep and wakefulness, and the role of imagination in making laws in the axis of philosopher, prophet, first president. In this context, "What are the points that Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā were affected by the ancient Greek philosophers on imagination?"; "What are the original thoughts of Fārābī and Ibn Sīnā about imagination?" answers to questions were sought. While resolving these questions, care was taken to clarify the functions of the faculty of reason and imagination in the realization of prophethood, in which the prophet experienced different levels of consciousness. The inclusion of vision theories, which allow the effect of of al-'aql al-faāl to be perceived in the objective world, to the problem of prophethood, has been examined. Fārābī 's transformation of divination into prophecy was emphasized, and the superiority of prophethood over madness and magic was tried to be proved.
