Abstract (EN)

REMOVAL OF HEAVY METALS FROM WATER WITH ACTIVE CARBONSIMPROVED BY DIFFERENT ACTIVATION METHODSİrfan AkikolChemical Engineering, M.S. ThesisActivated carbons are carbonaceous materials with highly developed internal surface area andporosity that can be applied in both gas and liquid phase applications. In recent years, avariety of conventional granular activated carbons and ion exchange resins have been used inwater treatment and to treat a wide range of domestic and industrial effluents containingorganic and inorganic pollutants.Nickel is a toxic heavy metal that is widely used in silver refineries, electroplating, zinc basecasting and storage battery industries. The chronic toxicity of nickel to humans and theenvironment has been well documented. It is essential to remove Ni (II) from industrialwastewater before being discharged. In this study, commercial activated carbon has been used for the removal of nickel (II) fromaqueous solution by adsorption. Also activated carbon was prepared by activatingelectrochemical oxidation and HNO3 oxidation has been used to remove nickel (II) fromaqueous solution. The effects of the pH and initial adsorbent concentration are investigated. The effect of the nickel adsorption capasity were investigated in an agitated batch reactor andthe Langmuir ve Freundlich adsorption isotherms were developed. Keywords: Adsorption, Activated carbon, Ni(II) removalJURY:1.
