Abstract (EN)

Aim: Since the dawn of humanity, plants have been used for various purposes, including disease prevention and treatment. In recent years, the importance of medicinal and aromatic plants has increased. This is due to the high demand for phytotherapeutics containing standardised medicinal plant extracts and aromatherapeutics formulated with essential oils for medicinal purposes, both globally and in our country. Today, triterpenoids are also considered potential pharmaceutical compounds. Purified compounds or plant extracts enriched with these triterpenoids have been shown to exhibit antidiabetic properties in both human and animal model systems. The aim of this study was to determine the antidiabetic potential of Salvia multicaulis Vahl. and Mentha longifolia (L.) L. subsp. typhoides (Briq.) Harley. These species are known to be rich in ursolic and olealonic acids, as reported in the literature, and were collected from different localities. Material and Method: Ethanol extracts of Salvia multicaulis Vahl and Mentha longifolia (L.) L. subsp. typhoides (Briq.) Harley were prepared and their antidiabetic properties were determined using α-amylase and α-glucosidase methods. Results: The study found that the prepared ethanol extracts of Salvia species had higher activity of the α-glucosidase enzyme compared to the α-amylase enzyme, in comparison to acarbose. The highest percentage of inhibition for α-glucosidase was observed in Salvia and Mentha extracts, with values of 98.49±1.10 and 84.54±1.34, respectively. For α-amylase, the values were 26.72±0.45 and 25.41±0.39, respectively. According to the results of the CTC, the leaf ethanol extracts of the two species were found to be richer in ursolic and oleanolic acids. Conclusion: These two species, which are known to be rich in ursolic and olealonic acids, have the potential to be used in the pharmaceutical industry, particularly due to their α-glucosidase enzyme activities.
