Abstract (EN)
The aim of this study is in vitro evaluation of the effects of different mechanical treatment instruments on titanium implant surfaces. For this purpose, thirty ink-stained implants which are inserted in standardized epoxy resin models with narrow defect angulations (30°) are used in three different study groups. The standardized peri-implantitis models are covered by a non-transparent custom-made mucosa mask to provide the visual display of gingiva for simulating of non-surgical mechanical therapy. An air powder abrasive device using trehalose powder with a special nozzle for subgingival application (APAD) (n=10), an ultrasonic device with a special designed implant tip (NUS) (n=10), and an ultrasonic device with a subgingival tip (VUS) (n=10) were used. A blinded and calibrated examiner evaluated the standardized photographs of instrumented implant surfaces with image-processing software. The total cleaned area of APAD group was found significantly higher than both NUS (p:0.020, p<0.05) and VUS (p:0.022, p<0.05) groups. The average percentage of cleaned area of APAD group was significantly higher than both NUS (p:0.017, p<0.05) and VUS (p:0.044, p<0.05) groups. Within the limits of this in vitro study the air abrasive device demonstrated better cleaning performance than the two different power-driven ultrasonic devices, although, complete surface cleanliness was not achieved in any of the three instrumentation methods during non-surgical treatment simulation of peri-implant defects. Further microbiological and clinical research are needed to confirm the clinical relevance of the in vitro findings.
