Science teachers' views on 21st century skills levels

Abstract (EN)

In today's world where science and technology are changing rapidly day by day, it is increasingly important to train individuals with 21st century skills who can adapt to this development.The aim of the top study that 21st century skills should have for an individual to be successful in the age of science and technology is to examine science teachers' views on problem solving, entrepreneurship and 21st century skills self-efficacy. Field survey and relational research methods, which are among the descriptive research methods, were used in the study. Science teachers working in the districts of Eyyubiye Haliliye and Karaköprü in the province of Şanlıurfa in the 2019-2020 academic year; the sample consists of a total of 261 science teachers, 151 women and 110 men.In order to collect data, each of the science teachers working in this region was reached and taken into the study on a voluntary basis.For this reason, necessary permissions have been obtained from the Şanlıurfa Provincial Directorate of National Education.The data of the study were collected quantitatively.Within the scope of the study, 21st century skills self-efficacy scale, entrepreneurship scale and problem solving scale were applied to science teachers.During the research, the quantitative data obtained through data collection tools were interpreted statistically by performing ANOVA analysis on the SPSS 21 program.In addition, t test, Mann-Whitney U test and descriptive statistics studies were carried out on the data.In line with the findings obtained as a result of the research, it was determined that science teachers' self-efficacy perceptions of 21st century skills, entrepreneurship levels and problem solving levels are high. It has been determined that there is a moderately positive relationship between science teachers' self-efficacy perceptions of 21st century skills and their entrepreneurship levels, and there is a highly significant positive relationship between 21st century skills self-efficacy perceptions and problem solving levels.Likewise, it has been determined that there is a high level of positive relationship between the entrepreneurship levels of science teachers and their problem solving levels.It was found that science teachers' 21st century skills self-efficacy perception scale and its sub-dimensions learning and renewal skills, life career skills, information media and technology skills did not differ significantly according to gender and educational status( p>.05 ). However, it is understood that the knowledge, media and technology skills of science teachers who have a service period of 16 years or more are higher than teachers who are between 6-10 years.It was found that science teachers' mean scores of entrepreneurship scale and its sub-dimensions such as risk taking, seeing opportunities, self-confidence, emotional intelligence, and being innovative do not differ significantly according to gender, length of service and education level ( p>.05 ). It was found that science teachers' problem solving scale and its sub-dimensions, which are the effects of problem solving, think about the effects of problem solving, problem solving through modeling, researching alternative solutions, determination in applying the determined solution, analyzing the encountered problem, the mean scores do not differ significantly according to gender, service time and educational status ( p>.5).
