Abstract (EN)

REMOVAL OF PHENOLFROM AQUEOUS SOLUTIONSBY COAGULATION(M.Sc. Thesis )Ahmet Ya ız BARINGAZI UNIVERSITYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYNovember 2006ABSTRACTDeveloping technologies, rapid and unplanned industrialization are pollutingthe waters, which is the main component of our lifes. This pollution causesnegative effects on human and environmental life. There are many studies inorder to prevent this pollution. Besides, countries are making laws to define themaximum limits of the pollutants. The aim is to reduce their wasterwaterpollutants below these limits. Phenol and its derivatives are being used in manyindustrial processes. Due to the toxic nature and abundance in wastewaters, theremoval of phenols is very important. The aim of this study is to investigate the coagulation performance on removingphenol from aqueous solutions. Ferric chloride (FeCl3) and ferrous sulphate(FeSO4) were used as coagulants during coagulation experiments. The effects ofpH, initial phenol concentration, waiting period, temperature and salts (CaCl2and Na2HPO4), on coagulation efficiency are investigated. The best phenol removal efficiencies are achieved with 500 ppm initial phenolconcention at 25 oC, with an efficency of about 95 % by using ferric chloride(FeCl3) at pH 10,5 and about 93 % by using ferrous sulphate (FeSO4) at pH 9,5.Moreover, it has been observed that the presence of salts and highertemperatures enhance the coagulation.Science Code : 912.1.086Key Words : Phenol, Coagulation, Treatment of phenolsPage Number : 91Adviser : Prof. Dr. Ufuk GÜNDÜZ ZAFER
