Abstract (EN)
The Fiscal Theory of the Price Level (FTMT) is an approach that emphasizes the role of fiscal policies in determining the price level in the economy. According to this theory, public debt and budget deficits directly affect the price level. At the core of the FTMT is that government budget deficits and public debt affect consumer and investor behavior by increasing future tax liabilities. In this context, budget deficits are seen as the main determinant of the price level. According to FTMT, budget deficits and public debt entail future tax increases and this expectation affects current price levels. If the market expects the government to repay its debts by printing money, this leads to higher current prices. Fiscal policy influences monetary policy and this interaction determines the price level. If expansionary fiscal policy is not balanced by tight monetary policy, inflationary pressures increase. However, there are also criticisms and alternative views to the FTMT. Monetarist approaches oppose the FTMT, arguing that the money supply is the main determinant of the price level. Keynesian economists, on the other hand, argue that the FTMT's focus on fiscal policy alone is insufficient. The New Classical and Real Business Cycle theories question the implications of the FTMT for long-term economic equilibrium and the price level. Inflation targeting provides an important example of how modern central banks direct monetary policy and criticizes FTMT's overemphasis on fiscal policy. As a result, FTMT stands out as an important theory for coordinating economic policies and achieving price stability.
