Abstract (EN)

Fossil resource depletion, dependence on energy, increasing fuel costs and environmental concerns caused by fossil fuel vehicles, along with advances in battery technology and manufacturing processes have fueled the transition towards electric vehicles (EV). The adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has been examined in various settings, yet the issue has rarely been addressed for less developed settings in terms of transport institutions, policies, and practices. However, mainly due to their high investment costs (retail purchase price) of EVs, it is currently economically uncompetitive with traditional fossil fuel-powered vehicles without various supportive policy measures. Challenges and opportunities in the country are discussed and presented in the form of a SWOT analysis. This paper analyzes current costs and future prospects for EVs compared to conventional petrol cars looking at the total costs of ownership. A questionnaire was conducted to examine the current status of electric vehicle adoption in Turkey and to find out people's opinions and their acceptance of the idea of electric cars. And the prophet model was used to forecast the volume of share market of EVs by years. The study shows that the potential transition to electric vehicles in Turkey presents several social and technical challenges that need to be overcome including policies, institutions, current market dynamics, technological infrastructure, and social constraints. However, acceptance of electric vehicles is still low in the country. To this end, social awareness activities, especially electric public transportation, and electric public fleets, should be strengthened for electric vehicles to achieve greater visibility. In addition of that, EVs infrastructure should be further expanded in most parts of Turkey and more steps should be taken regarding EVs related incentives.
