Abstract (EN)

The book, which acts as a bridge between the author and the reader, is two parts of a whole, including its cover. The reader first encounters the book with its cover design. With the first impression it leaves, the cover creates a holistic perception in the mind after reading the book. In this context, it is of great importance that the cover design be designed in a way that creates integrity with the content. The world we live in is a world of communication with signs. In order to understand these signs, interpretation is needed. Each sign has a specific message that it conveys, and this is where semiotics comes into play so that we can make interpretations. The general purpose of this thesis is to analyze Gabriel Garcia Marquez's Utku Lomlu-designed book covers with Roland Barthes' semiotic method. For this purpose, three book covers were selected. The designs discussed were examined in terms of essence-form, analysis and critical literature review. Additionally, a qualitative research process was followed to reach realistic and holistic results by researching and analyzing various documents.
