Investigation of biological activities ofGalium incanum plant extracts

Due to the high bacterial resistance to many antibiotics, new antimicrobial drug studies are being conducted from natural plants and herbal products. They are thought to be more reliable than synthetic drugs. Moreover, the challenge to antimicrobial drugs is the lack of testing and development opportunities. The aim of our study was to investigate the antimicrobial activities of the Galium incanum plant extracts against different bacteria strains and to check their DNA protection property. This plant had some remarkable antimicrobial effect and displayed great DNA protection effect. Ethyl acetate and methanol extracts affected the different strains of gram positive and gram negative bacteria but it was less for water extract for this plant. The ethyl acetate extract showed the best MBC value which was 500 μg/ml for E. coli, Serratia marrecens, Staphylococcus epidermis, Alpha haemolyticus streptococcus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 1304. DNA protections results showed that 10 mg / ml water extract had the most protection activity (74%), followed by methanol extract with 66% DNA protection. This study provides additional insights into the biological potential of three different plant extracts from the Galium incanum. The outcome of the research has opened many doors for the future scientists to work on the development of antimicrobial drugs from the plant extracts.
