Abstract (EN)
This thesis study, ?UNPLANNED URBANIZATION AND SLUM PROBLEMS IN THE GAP REGION, DIYARBAKIR, GAZIANTEP AND ŞANLIURFA EXAMPLES? is designed to have two sections. The first three chapters that constitute the first part of the study is based on the theoretical knowledge from previous studies and statistical data about the region. The fourth chapter of the study that constitute the second part includes the empirical study about the metropolitan cities of the region; Diyarbakır, Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa. In the first part of the study; the city concept, the emergence and features of cities in the historical process, urban theories and urban planning are described. After describing the concept of urbanization, historical development of urbanization and the urbanization before and after the Industrial Revolution, the development of urbanization in the developed and developing countries is described. After these general explanations, unplanned urbanization and its reasons are described. Upon giving this basic information, the first part of the study is completed with the urbanization legislation, the development of urbanization, the causes of urbanization, the policy of urbanization and characteristics of urbanization. The second part of the study describes urbanization and the reasons of unplanned urbanization in the GAP Region. As GAP is a regional development plan, the concept of region, regional planning and its relation with urbanization is briefly noted. The development of urbanization in the GAP region is defined with the comparison of the population growth rate, the urbanization rate and the speed of urbanization with the rates of Turkey from the first census in 1927 till 2010 ABPRS results. GAP is one of Turkey's most ambitious regional development projects and is classified as a real dream for the thousand years. With the start of implementation of the GAP in the early 1990s the population and the number of cities and rate of urbanization has increased. To show the development of urbanization in the GAP region between 1990-2010 in detail, the rate of population growth rate, urbanization rate and urbanization speed in 80 cities one by one are explained in comparison with Turkey. After explaining the urbanization in the region in terms of the development in city sizes and their populations, the features of urbanization particular to the region are indicated. This part is completed after explaining the unplanned urbanization and its reasons in the GAP region. In the third section of the study squatting in the region and causes for it are described. Since squatter houses are a type of shelter, first of all the concepts of housing and squatters are indicated. After explaining the emergence of slums and its reasons throughout the history of the Republic, the development of slums and their properties are listed chronologically. Upon having explaining the efforts to prevent slums some information about the slum policies is provided. After explaining the housing conditions, the housing and slums in the GAP region, by explaining the reasons of squatting in the region the third section is completed. In the fourth and the last part of the study the empirical study about the metropolitan cities of the regions Diyarbakır, Gaziantep and Şanlıurfa is explained. Since unplanned urbanization is described as the irregularities covering infrastructure and superstructure and construction contrary to the standards of urban construction, the questions in the questionnaire are a little bit much because they have been prepared to cover all of these issues. However, when the issues associated with urbanization are considered, it can be seen that the amount of the questions in the survey is normal. It is wanted to identify the current status of the urbanization, unplanned, irregular and illegal urbanization, briefly and the reasons of unplanned urbanization with the questionnaire. After explaining the problems caused by unplanned urbanization and squatting in the GAP Region study was completed with the conclusion part.
