Abstract (EN)

Acute upper gastrointestinal system (GIS) bleeding is a significant source of mortality and morbity. The aim of our study is to investigate the factors affecting mortality and morbity in acute upper GIS bleeding.This study conducted by retrospectively on patients hospitilazed with upper GIS bleeding diagnosis between 1999 and 2007. Patients? risk factors for mortality and repeat bleeding were investigated.Risk factors affecting mortality were evaluated as comorbid illnesses, active bleeding, being age of over 50, erythrocyte support. A total of 105 case (39 female, 66 male) included in this study. Patients? age interval ranged from 19 to 97 years.In this study, 81% of cases were accompanied by one or more comorbid systematic illness. With 20%, congestive heart failure ( CHF) was more often seen comorbid illness. 43 patients were diagnosed as duodenal ulcer bleeding, 10 patients were gastric ulcer bleeding, 30 patients were bleedings exposed to gastric and drug usage, 22 patients were portal gastropathy.76% of the cases were over 50 years of age. Blood transfusion needed for 63 cases (%76,2). In 25 cases, more than five units transfusion were applied.Advanced age, existence of comorbid illness, blood transfusion of more than five units, rebleeding during hospitalization are the factors that affects mortality and morbity most.Key Words; comorbid illness, rebleeding
