Abstract (EN)

This research examines the development in Gazi Education Faculty between 1982 and 2004, and handles its place and importance in the Turkish teachers training system. ?Secondary Teachers Training School? was established in 1926 with the aim of raising teachers for middle schools and has served under the name of ?Gazi Education Institute? until 1978. In 1979-80, this institution was restructured under the name of ?Gazi Higher Teachers School? where its education period was increased from 3 years to 4. This institution was attached to Gazi University under the name of ?Gazi Education Faculty? in 1982 where the duties of raising teachers were transferred to the universities. Gaining a new status, structure, and function, Gazi Education Faculty has shown a significant development so far. With the regulation in 1992, the Higher Education Schools (4 year) were attached to Education Faculties as Primary School Teaching Program. Again with that regulation, Physical Education and Sports Department was attached to the Rector?s office ad Higher School of Physical Education and Sports. Education faculties were organized within the scope of Higher Education Board of Turkey-World Bank Pre-service Teachers Training Project between 1994 and 1998. The departments of Primary School and Computer and Teaching Technologies were opened within the scope of reorganization. The departments intended for raising secondary education teachers were reorganized to apply 5-year education programs and those intended for raising primary education teachers to apply 4-year education programs. Gazi Education Faculty which have taken important steps during all these regulatory processes have had a significant place in training teachers, in guiding education policies at national and international levels, in producing and spreading scientific knowledge, by integrating the accumulation and experience brought from its deep-rooted past with the knowledge put forward by contemporary theories and researches, to raise teachers, managers, inspectors, and specialists for every level of formal and informal education.
