Abstract (EN)

Zambır is a wind instrument which is performed in Barak regions in Gaziantep. It is also called "çatal kamış" and "kartal kanadı" in the region and performed within master-apprentice relationship by the musicians who are called "abdal" or "aşiret" and whose only means of existence is musicianship. Zambır is comprised of two pipes that are tied or sticked to each other. There are pitches on one of the pipes. The other pipe plays only "dem" sound. Zambır can be evaluated as as a polyphonic instrument in terms of gaining different resonances in Turkish folk music. There are many "two pipe" instruments in different civilizations and countries. It is called "Aulos" in Ancient Greece; "Çifte Kaval"; "Çifte" and "Zambır" in Turkey; Launeddas" in Italy; "Koş–ney" in Central Asian Turks; "Duzare" in Iran; "Zummara" and "Argul" in Arab World and "Double Pishik" in Russia. Altough they vary in terms of their form, performing styles and repertories, they all have two pipes.
