The analysis of traditional houses and alteration of socio-culturel structure of Gaziantep city

THE ANALYSIS OF TRADITIONAL HOUSES AND ALTERATION OF SOCIO-CULTUREL STRUCTURE OF GAZİANTEP CITYFeyza TATLIGİLArchitecture, M.S. ThesisTraditional Gaziantep housing texture that has been shaped by different ethnic groups ondifferent times , are now leaving their places to unqualified concrete blocks which are notreflecting the original cultural concept. The alteration of the socio-cultural conditions thatwere taking a very important part in forming these traditional houses, are now preventing theconservation of this valuable cultural heritage. The desire of living in more qualified andcontemporary houses is one of the most important reasons of leaving these traditional housesto their fates.In this work, Gaziantep traditional urban fabric is being investigated physical and socialcharacteristics point of view, which is coming face to face to vanish nowadays. During thisresearch, all information about the subject was tried to get by observations, interviews, publicsurvey, literature scanning and site is examined by the help of maps, photographs and byusing survey methodology. Gaziantep?s physical morphology, general plans and structures oftraditional houses, the physical characteristics of constructional components that compose thehouses and the socio-cultural urban alteration are evaluated in this work. Negative andpositive expressions of the users, the actual usage of the traditional houses for today, are alsoexamined in this research. It is aimed to consider explain that these houses must be restoredand kept alive not only for saving our cultural heritage but should be evaluated as a housingstock as well. As a conclusion, Gaziantep traditional houses must be modified and adaptedaccording to the contemporary conditions with the implementations by treating the physicaland social structures together, public must be acquainted and became conscious about thesematters.Keywords: Gaziantep, Gaziantep houses, traditional housing texture, socio-culturelalteration.JURY:1.
