Gaziantep University staff awareness, attitudeand behaviour towards primary, secondary andtertiary health protections

This study adopts a cross-sectional survey design with a sampling from Gaziantep University staff including 403 respondents. This study aims to examine the Gaziantep University staff awareness, attitude and behaviour towards primary, secondary and tertiary healthcare protections. Respondents are given questionnaires and tested with the Healthy Life Style Behavior Scale II (HLSB). The questionnaire data is analysed using independent sample t-test and chi-square test. According to the findings, respondents' age average is 36.57±11.77 with 51.1% of them being female and 81.1% having university degree. 45.9% of health care staff had vaccination for Hepatitis B. Of all staff, the frequency rate of one-time healthcare tests for blood pressure is 80.1%, for blood sugar is 74.4% and for cholesterol is 54.6%. 25.3% of staff are aware of cancer screening tests. The frequency rate of cancer screening tests at ideal ages for colorectal cancer screening is 13.2%, for pop smear test is 21.5%, for mammography is 31.4% and for prostate cancer screening is 6.7%. The most common chronic health issues are hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypothyroid, asthma, hyperlipidaemia and coronary artery which are generally diagnosed once symptomized. Based on the HLSB scale, the overall average score is 126.76±21.13. The HLSB subscale scores in descending order are self-fulfilment, interpersonal relations, personal diet, health care consciousness, stress management and physical activities. As a result, awareness and behaviour of healthcare staff differ from the other staff members in the other departments and all staff members are found to be not well-informed and do not act in a responsible manner and behaviour about protection and improvement of their health. As a solution, some policy implications can be implemented such as staff trainings on health issues, ensuring a working environment for healthcare developments, routine health check-ups and taking measures to control medically risky behaviours.
