Prof. Dr. Eyyüp RENCÜZOĞULLARIProf. Dr. Mehmet TOPAKTAŞProf. Dr. Rüştü HATİPOĞLUIn the present study, the effects of the low caloric artifical sweetener maltitol,which is a member of sugar alocohol (poliol), on sister chromatid exchange (SCE),chromosome aberration (CA) and micronucleus formation (MN) were investigated inhuman peripheral lymphocytes.Maltitol did not induce SCE in all concentrations (1.25, 2.5 and 5 mg/ml) andtreatment periods (24 and 48 hours). Maltitol induced the CA when compared withcontrol however, without statistically significant. Maltitol statistically significant(P<0.05) induced the frequency of MN for 24 and 48 hours treatment period, withoutdose-dependend manner. In addition maltitol did not decrease the RI and the MI inall concentrations and treatment periods. Also maltitol did not change the pH andosmolity of the chromosome medium. In conclusion, it can be concluded thatmaltitol has a weak genotoxic risk however it has not cytotoxic effect in humanperipheral lymphocytes in vitro.Key Words: Maltitol, Human peripheral lymphocytes, Sister chromatid exchange,Chromosome aberrations, Micronucleus
