Investigation of the effect of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy on quality of life and adjustment to pregnancy and maternity

Aim: The aim of this study was to examine the effects of nausea and vomiting in pregnancy on quality of life and adjustment to pregnancy and maternity Materials and Methods: The population of this descriptive cross-sectional study consisted of 1738 pregnant women who applied to a university hospital in Izmir in 2019. The sample size of the study was determined as 315 pregnant women using the known formula with 95% confidence interval and 5% standard deviation. In the study, women's introductory characteristics questionnaire, Short-Form 36 Quality of Life Scale and Prenatal Self Evaluation Questionnaire were used. Results: In the study, the mean scores of role difficulties (physical), social function, pain and general health were found to be low in women who stated that they were adversely affected by nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. The mean total score of Prenatal Self Evaluation Questionnaire was 146.2 ± 30.1. This mean score was statistically significantly higher for women who live at home with four or more people, whose spouse's age group was 28 and above, who had four or more pregnancies and children, who had unwanted pregnancy and who stated that they were incompatible with their spouses and it was determined that these women's adaptation to motherhood was insufficient. Acceptance of pregnancy sub-dimension mean score was found to be higher in women who stated that they were adversely affected by nausea and vomiting. Conclusion: There was a moderate correlation between the total score of Prenatal Self Evaluation Questionnaire and mental health and vitality, and a low correlation with other negative sub-dimensions.
