An investigation of gender perception from the past to the present through Ömer Seyfettin, Aziz Nesin, and Yalvaç Ural's children's literature works

The main purpose of this research is to examine in terms of gender the children's literature works of Ömer SEYFETTİN, the writer of the founding years of the Republic, Aziz NESİN, one of the writers of Turkey after 1950, and Yalvaç URAL, one of the writers close to the period we live in after the 2000s, and to examine whether the perception of gender in children's literature works has differed from past to present. In accordance with the sub-goals of the research, 8 books from each of the three relevant authors have been randomly selected and examined, and answers to the questions of sub-goals have been sought. In the first part of the research, sub- problems depending on the problem situation, the importance and the purpose of the thesis, limitations and assumptions are clearly stated, the research of the subject is briefly included. In the second part of the research, a conceptual framework has been created with the types of children's literature, what gender is, its importance and related research. The research has been designed in accordance with quantitative research methods. In this study conducted within the scope of quantitative research, a descriptive scanning model has been used. The data obtained from the examinations conducted in the research has been analyzed considering the main purpose and sub-goals of the research. The books of Ömer SEYFETTİN, Yalvaç URAL and Aziz NESİN create the study universe. The study sample consists of 8 randomly selected books of Ömer SEYFETTİN, Yalvaç URAL and Aziz NESİN that suitable for primary school level. The Works included in the review vere scanned one by one. The data obtained from the scan is recorded as evidence. Each book has been examined based on questions regarding gender perception, and tables have been created by numbers for each question. The data obtained based on the tables created have been expressed with extracts, and conclusions regarding gender perception have been reached. In the results obtained from the research; In the books that are examined, we see that alongside evaluating each author on their own works, the time period in which the authors lived or produced their works has an impact on works in terms of gender perception. Moreover we see that the language used by Yalvaç URAL in his works is far from the perception of gender, and that the author benefits the roles of male and female characters while processing social values slightly, in Ömer SEYFETTİN's stories, due to the influence of the time, the female character is almost unavailable or depicted as a passive character at home, in Aziz NESİN's stories, the existence of female characters was very low in the first years of the Republic, but with the Republican period, female characters were included in every area of life. The fundamental purpose is to give values to children and does not upload gender status on them. Just like men, women can already the responsibility, contribute to family income and have to stand on their feet. We can see that the perception of gender has change in time period in which three writers lived and the female character has became a part of society more. Moreover, it has been revealed how important the books to be read to children are in terms of gender perception.
