Analysis of the traditional shadow play in terms of graphic design and character design of the shadow play

Shadow has existed since the beginning of humankind and will continue to exist. Shadow play has always had a mystical and magical effect on people. Karagöz, which contains traces and layers of history that have existed for centuries, is a quite significant cultural heritage and recollection for Turks. The thesis aims to design new characters on leather, which is the traditional method, with conventional techniques and designs, while preserving the museum value of Karagöz. The thesis consists of six sections. In the first part of the thesis, information is given about puppet theatre, Orta Oyunu and Karagöz in Traditional Turkish Dramatic Arts. The second part contains information about shadow play in Asia and Europe under the title of Shadow Play in the World.In the third chapter subjects like the history, formation, and acting of Karagöz, the characters in the play, Karagöz plays, artists, music, Unesco, and Karagöz are explained. In the fourth section, there are interviews with Karagöz masters, and in the fifth section, there are examinations of Karagöz in terms of design. As for the sixth section, there is an application study. The research utilized interview techniques and literature survey, which are qualitative research methods. In line with the aims of the thesis, an application study was carried out. It is thought that the participation of Turkish Shadow Play in the studies to be carried out in the field of graphic design will contribute to the transfer to future generations and ensure sustainability.
