The impacts of Turkish culture and Turkish art on modern Turkish painting art

Traditional culture has been effective along all historical phases of Turkish painting. Thiseffect was solidified on the path to embody a national fine arts style against the tries toestablish a universal artistic language. Along the history of Turkish painting traditional culturehas hosted two tendencies, one of which is going through traditional and the other localmatters. On the other hand Turkish artists have aimed at not staying far fromcontemporariness. This aim was resulted in localization and nationalization of importedabstract arts from the West from 1950s on through the use of miniatures, calligraphy andsimilar folkloric arts. This phenomenon was initiated by primitive painters and lasted throughTurkish Republic era painters. The situation was renewed by the contributions of Group D,Group Yeniler, Group Yenidal, Socialist Realists, Naives and painters of later periods. BedriRahmi Eyüboğlu and Turgut Zaim are distinguished painters that have an extraordinary effectwithin such contributions. (Arseven,1973;Aslanapa,1993;Tansuğ,1993,1996)The points cited above were underlined through literature review mostly leaning on thearchives of art-magazines such as Milliyet Sanat, Sanat Çevresi and Sanat Dünyamız alongwith reference books, while theses and dissertations prepared on the same subject were madeuse of as well. The uniqueness of this thesis from others has been the point that it focused onthe products of artists rather than concentrating on the theoretical dimensions.
