The relationship between migration and uneployment: A descriptive analysis with Türkiye data

This study aims to examine the relationship between migration and unemployment in Turkey. Migration creates a mobility, particularly from rural areas to cities, driven by the search for economic opportunities and employment. It is understood that migrants do not only move in search of jobs, but also need employment to sustain their social lives. This situation forces them to participate in the labor market in the places they migrate to. However, the fact that migrants are often lacking the qualifications and skills required in the urban labor market leads to an increase in unemployment. Moreover, migrants' willingness to work for lower wages also negatively impacts the local labor market. The study demonstrates that migration in Turkey leads to imbalances in the labor market and contributes to an increase in unemployment rates, causing significant changes in the local labor market. As a result, the study emphasizes the need to strengthen employment policies in the local labor market, particularly focusing on the integration of migrants into urban areas.
