Abstract (EN)
ABSTRACT Problems Faced by Immigrant Women in Accessing Employment and Their Professional Lives and Proposed Solutions: The Case of Gaziantep Province Migration has occurred throughout history for various reasons and has significantly shaped the social, economic, and cultural fabric of societies. In today's world, war, economic instability, and social pressures have made migration processes even more complex and intense. Due to its geopolitical position, Türkiye has been directly affected by these movements, facing a large influx of migrants—particularly as a result of the Syrian civil war. Among these migrants, women represent one of the most vulnerable groups, encountering numerous obstacles in their efforts to participate in the labor market. This study examines the employment access processes of migrant women living in Gaziantep and the challenges they face, using qualitative research methods. Interviews with 33 migrant women from diverse educational backgrounds revealed that the majority struggle to find employment due to limited language proficiency, issues with diploma equivalency, difficulties in obtaining work permits, employer biases, and uncertain citizenship status. Furthermore, the prevalence of fake job advertisements, discrimination, and lack of access to information further complicates their path to employment. Although some participants find job opportunities through their social networks, these positions are typically low-paid, involve long working hours, and lack social security. Experiences of cultural adaptation in the workplace also vary: while some women report supportive environments, others face exclusion and discrimination. The findings highlight the need for policies that improve migrant women's access to employment through language courses, vocational training programs, legal support mechanisms, and the reinforcement of equality in hiring practices. It is crucial for public institutions, the private sector, and civil society organizations to collaborate and develop comprehensive strategies that strengthen these women's participation in economic and social life.
