Abstract (EN)

Communication media which address visual and auditory senses of individuals via sound and image are called audiovisual media. To fully understand audiovisual media such as movies in its totality may appear compelling for visually impaired individuals since sound and image are considered as primary transmission channels. Audiodescription can be described as a technique which uses special description methods to transfer the visual elements of a movie for visually impaired individuals and therefore can be regarded as intersemiotic translation. Compared to different translation types, audiodescription is a multidimensional process since audiodescription includes more than one transmission channels. This study traces first the history and methods of audiodescription and then positions the phenomenon in the theoretical framework of semiotics with reference to culture and translation studies. The thesis analyses the Turkish and German transfers of the visual elements of the movie "Goodbye, Lenin!" by Wolfgang Becker with particular focus on semiotics and concludes that the existing differences are caused by cultural factors.
