Abstract (EN)

The pebble stone mosaic paving the floor of the Megaron 2 structure, which was unearthed in the 5th excavation season at Gordion in 1956, is dated to 850-800 BC. It is one of the oldest known mosaics in the world. The mosaics were removed and moved to concrete panels in 1963 by Muzaffer Ertoran, who was appointed by the Antiques Directorate. The mosaic panels were kept outdoors in the excavation house until 1983, open to climate and weather conditions. During this period, deterioration, cracks, and losses developed in the mosaics, unsuitable repair was made in the exhibition area, causing the mosaic patterns to disappear. Despite the maintenance, the loss and deterioration of the mosaic, which has been exhibited in the museum garden, under the porch, below the ground level, and in the open air in unsuitable conditions since 1983, continues. In terms of the care of the mosaics, ease of maintenance, repair and display, it is necessary to transfer them to light carriers compatible with the material from which the mosaics are made. This should be done without damaging the pebbles. Although there are methods that are defined and applied safely in mosaics from tesserae, a safe method has not yet been described for mosaics made of pebbles. In this study, a facing model made with silicon on a pebble mosaic panel on a pebble concrete carrier with similar characteristics to Gordion mosaics was tested.
