Abstract (EN)

This research investigates the intricate relationship between monetary policy and inflation in the diverse landscape of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries. Comprising 16 nations with varying economic structures, ranging from resource-rich to emerging markets, the SADC region faces distinctive challenges and opportunities that necessitate a nuanced examination of the dynamics between monetary policy decisions and inflationary pressures. With a focus on the efficacy of monetary tools employed by central banks across the SADC nations, this study aims to unravel the complex web of factors contributing to diverse inflationary trends within the region. By scrutinizing policy frameworks, transmission channels, and the overall effectiveness of monetary instruments, the research seeks to offer valuable insights into the mechanisms shaping inflation outcomes in these countries. According to the findings of Driscoll and Kraay (1998), the study has demonstrated that both money supply and exchange rate have a significant impact on inflation. Specifically, for every 1% increase in money supply, there is a corresponding 0.252% increase in the consumer price index. Additionally, an increase in the exchange rate leads to a 1.008% increase in the consumer price index. Conversely, interest rates exhibit a negative relationship with inflation: a 1% increase in interest rates results in a 0.312% decrease in the consumer price index in SADC countries. The significance of this research lies in its potential to inform evidence-based policy decisions, providing a deeper understanding of the interplay between monetary policy and inflation within the SADC context. Through the exploration of various economic variables and policy levers, the findings aim to contribute to the development of strategies that foster sustainable economic growth and stability across the World.
