Abstract (EN)

The religious building for praying is called the mosque in Islam. Islam as a religion, has not defined any specialised building type for praying. But as a result of need for mass praying places, mosques appear by time. Early design principles of mosque come from the need and function so it can be said that form follows function fort he first mosques. Because of this even though Islam had been practiced in various locations, the mosque desgin does not differ much. Mosques were the most important buildings for the religion based pre modern Islamic society. After the industrial revolution and modernism movement, society changes in many ways. The ideology of the new Turkish republic becomes secular, thus does not support the mosques as they were used to be. In the context of mosque architecture two way of approach emerges in this era. Secular side does not support the building of new mosques, denying the symbols of the past and the traditionalist side try to hold on to the shapes of the past era. As a result, in this period of time, mosque architecture imitates the shapes and forms of pre modernist era. Opposing to the early design principles of the mosque, now they are planned as function following the form. As a result, usage of the industrial revolution inventions in the construction of the mosque such as new construction materials and structrual systems are very limited.
