Two artists who is perpetuating miniature tradition in present-day techniques and new designs

Miniature craft is defined as pictures that serve to explain a text and that supports it from visual aspects and generally they are book pictures being created for the managing segment (palace and surrounding) as having certain styles. However, throughout history as artists from palaces worked in various workshops, different styles were influenced from one another and thus, miniatures having unique characters, as being independent from a single depiction approach both technically and with respect to the subjects, have been produced. During the Ottoman Period, book pictures (miniatures) have developed as being completely dependant on the palace and for more than three hundred years, products have been revealed. As being parallel to the empowerment of Ottoman Empire, importance was attached to picturing of books at the palace and this work has transformed into an art branch being supported by the sultans. In the applications of our time, miniature art continues to develop and yield products with the state support, fine arts faculties, and courses. Nowadays, many artists who have not broken from the miniature tradition and who have continued this tradition as being its representatives are attracting attention. Two of these artists, living and continuing to produce in our time have been evaluated and they have been the subject of this thesis study. One of these artists is Ulker Erke, who was raised at Suheyl Unver workshop dedicating herself to develop this work in Turkey, as having a certain traditional approach. The other artist is Taner Alakus, who represents a much younger generation, finding himself closer to current applications, as not being broken from the traditions but being open to renewals and realizing many different trial works. Within the context of this research being conducted, one-to-one interviews were held with the artists, their miniatures have been investigated, and differences of both artists have been mentioned. In the first section, by having a general look at Turkish miniature art, definition and historical development of miniature have been mentioned and examples from miniature art ranging from the time of Seljuk Empire to our time have been given. In the second section, it was mentioned about the life, art works, techniques, and used materials of artist Ulker Erke under different headings. In the third section, artist Taner Alakus has been introduced in a similar way. In the fourth section of thesis study, unique application works have been realized
