Tradition and modernism in the tought of Hasan Hanefi

This master's thesis deals with the issues of tradition and modernism and Hasan Hanefî's approach. Hasan Hanefî put forward the project of renewal in religious thought. The renewal initiative she aimed for with this project made a splash in the Islamic society. Hasan Hanefî argues that there is a need for reneval in understanding religion. According to her, while loyalty to the past and tradition is essential, modernity and contemporaneity are also necessary. The tajdid project has religious and social aspects. The situation has been effective in its being referred to as the "religious left" or "Islamıc left". According to Hasan Hanefî history is not static. History has a progressive, developing, changing and transforming structure. For this reason, sciences are not static. Sciences can be influenced not only by the time period in which they emerged, but also by changing conditions and the culture in which they were born. Hasan Hanefî, states that the science of theology is a science that seeks answers to questions in its own field rather than being an absolute science. Our thesis consists of an introduction and two parts. In the first part of our study, the subjects of tradition and modernity are explained. In the second chapter, Hasan Hanefî's contributions to contemporary Islamic thought in the context of tradition and renewal was investigated.
