Abstract (EN)

Objective Our research aims evaluating the participation of doctors and nurses working in an education and research hospital to the safety reporting system and to evaluate the perception of the employees of the administration's approach to reporting medical errors that threaten patient safety. Method: Research was conducted in one of the largest teaching and research hospitals of Izmir, Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. The questionnaire was given to 440 staff working as doctors and nurses in Tepecik Training and Research Hospital. The questionnaire was adapted from patient safety climate survey of "Agency to Healthcare Research and Quality". Surveys were analyzed using SPSS Statistic 21.0 software package. Results: The results indicate that the majority of participants in the research are aware of the existence of the event reporting system in the organization. Results have shown that nurses have higher awareness comparing to doctors. The male population who participated in our study is relatively more sensitive in asking for medication while women participants are seen to be more sensitive in medication practice than men. Although half of the participants said they would report if the safe surgery checklist was not properly filled, one-third of respondents were unclear which indicates there are some defects on this issue. Conclusion: Disregarding the occupational groups every employee in the association should be educated about the event reporting system. Important issues that should be taken into consideration are: 1. Scientifical efficiency 2. Cost, time and material productivity 3. Security on patient data and employees security 4. Obtaining adequate information before taking sides of a person or employee group. 5. Taken into consideration to feel empathy with patients and relatives. 6. And also to complete the promised process on time. The educational level of the employees in health institutions presents variety from highschool to high license. To enable these groups with different educational levels to work collaboratively and together " mix and goal oriented" education must be applied. Besides, it is very important to consider the definition, preceding, timing of the processes and also to take feedbacks. The efficient utilization of surgical safety checklist and complete reports not only allow control of preventable medical error to happen but also present as an important control mechanism in the operation units. The management must encourage the employees to make reports by presenting persuading and positive attitude. Also incriminating attitudes should be abandon to increase contributions. Sharing information with the employees about the analysis of the reports will provide the participation and cogency of event reporting system. Key words: medical error, event reporting, event reporting system
