Abstract (EN)

This study was conducted to determine whether there is a difference in measurement of oxygen saturation measurement values obtained with pulse oximeter from intact and involved sides in patients with stroke. Study was conducted in Ege University-Faculty of Medicine-Neurology Intensive Care Unit between 01.04.2017-28.02.2018. Study population was comprised of paretic/plegic patients diagnosed with stroke in Ege University-Faculty of Medicine-Neurology Intensive Care Unit between 01.04.2017-28.02.2018. Study sample was comprised of 63 patients hospitalized in Ege University-Faculty of Medicine-Neurology Intensive Care Unit between 01.04.2017-28.02.2018, diagnosed with stroke, were paretic/plegic, who met limitations of study and accepted to participate in study. For data collection in study, Patient Description and Physiological Parameters Monitoring Questionnaires developed by researchers, were used. Oxygen saturations and pulse rates were measured from intact and involved sides in hemiplegic and hemiparetic individuals with stroke, and recorded. In data analysis; paired sample t, Chi-square and correlation test were used. Data analysis obtained from study was performed on Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 24.0 package program. Of 63 patients included in study; 47.6% female, 52.4% male, 89% are diagnosed with ischemic stroke and 11% were diagnosed with hemorrhagic stroke. In conclusion of data analysis, a statistically significant difference was determined between mean saturation measurements obtained from intact and paralytic sites (p=.022). No statistically significant difference was determined between mean pulse measurements obtained from intact and paralytic sites (p=.580). While statistically significant difference was determined when mean saturation measurements between intact and paralytic sides in individuals for whom fluids were infused from intact extremity were compared(p=.049), no statistically significant difference was determined between both sides in individuals for whom fluids were infused from paralytic extremity (p=.218). While a statistically significant difference was determined between mean saturation measurements obtained from intact and paralytic sides among individuals with peripheral edema on their paralytic extremity (p=.707), no statistically significant difference was determined between both sides in individuals without peripheral edema on their paralytic extremity (p=.008). While no statistically significant difference was determined when mean saturation measurements obtained from intact and paralytic sides among individuals at 1-3 and 8-27 days of age who were diagnosed with stroke were compared, a statistically significant difference was determined between both sides in individuals at 4-7 days of age who were diagnosed with stroke (p=.042). A statistically significant difference was determined when mean saturation measurements obtained from intact and paralytic sides among individuals at 33-52 years of age were compared (p=,028). Similarly, while a statistically significant difference was determined between both sides among individuals at 53-75 years of age (p=.038), no statistically significant difference was determined between both sides among individuals at 76-93 years of age (p=1). In conclusion; measurement of oxygen saturation via pulse oximeter device from both sides in these individuals is recommended, although a statistically significant difference is determined between mean saturation measurements obtained from intact and paralytic sides, this difference is not important in clinical practice.
