Relationship between nurses" professional values and compassion and patience levels

2.ABSTRACT Objective: The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between nurses' professional values and their compassion and patience levels. Materials and Methods: This is a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted with 156 nurses working at Ege University Hospital between August and October 2019. Datas of the study were collected by using 'Nurse Identification Form', 'Profesyonel Professional Values of Nurses Scale', 'Mercy Scale' and 'Patience Scale'. Datas that obtained from the study were analyzed by using SPSS 25.0 (Statistical Package for Social Science). T test was used to test the difference between the averages of the two groups and independent samples. One-way analysis of variance was performed to test the means of multiple groups. Pearson Correlation test was used to test the correlation between variables. Findings: According to the research results, the nurses" professional values scale scores were 122.00±16.73; compassion scale scores were 94.89±10.90 and patience levels were 44.74±7.35. The study found that there was a positive but weak relationship between the professional values of nurses and their patience levels, and a positive but weak relationship between 'Patience Scale' and (r= .163 p= .042). There was a positive but weak relationship between the professional values of nurses and their compassion levels and a positive but weak relationship between the 'Compassion Scale' (r= .254, p= .001). Results: It was found that there was a relationship between the professional values of nurses and the levels of compassion and patience, and that compassion and patience increased as their professionalism increased.
