Abstract (EN)

Learning how to prioritise, assess and manage disaster victims can help nursing students to improve their self-efficacy in terms of disaster preparedness and response. This study examined the effect of simulation training based on the Jennings Disaster Nursing Management Model on nursing students' perception of their preparedness for and ability to intervene in disasters. This study was conducted in non-randomized groups, with a pre-test-post-test parallel controlled quasi-experimental design. It was conducted between October 2024 and January 2025 with final-year students at Selçuk University's Faculty of Nursing. The study population consisted of 130 nursing students: 65 in the simulation group and 65 in the control group. The simulation group underwent a 14-week training programme incorporating theoretical and simulation practices based on the Jennings Disaster Nursing Management Model. The control group received no training. Data were collected using the Introductory Information Form, the Perception of Disaster Preparedness in Nurses Scale, and the Disaster Response Self-Efficacy Scale. The data were analysed using the chi-square test, t-test in dependent groups, t-test in independent groups, McNemar–Bowker test and McNemar test. Following the simulation training programme based on the Jennings Disaster Nursing Management Model, it was found that the mean scores of the simulation group on all sub-dimensions, as well as the total scores on the Disaster Preparedness Perception Scale for Nurses and the Disaster Response Self Efficacy Scale, had increased in the post-test compared to the control group, and that this increase was statistically significant (p<0.05). It was concluded in this study that simulation training based on the Jenning Disaster Nursing Management Model is effective in increasing nursing students' perception of disaster preparedness and intervention self-efficacy. In line with this finding, it is recommended that more simulation training programmes structured around the Jenning Disaster Nursing Management Model are included in the curriculum.
