An Investigation of communication skills and emphatetic tendency of nursing students

Aim:Theaim of thisstudy is toinvestigateempathetictendency, communicationskillsandemotionalintelligencelevel of nursingstudents. MaterialsandMethods:Thisstudywasconductedwith a total of 252 studentsstudying in theDepartment of Nursing, Faculty of HealthSciences of a stateuniversity. "Personal Information Form", "EmpatheticTendencyScale", "CommunicationSkillsScale" and "Rotterdam EmotionalIntelligenceScale" wereusedtocollectdata. An Online datacollectionformswerepreparedand an online survey link was sent totheparticipantsfromvariousdigitalplatforms, enablingthemtoparticipate in thesurvey. Dataanalysiswas done with SPSS 20 statistical program. Results:Themeanage of thestudentsparticipating in thestudywas 20.30±1.63 and 70.6% of themwerewomen. Participants' EmpathicTendencyScalemeanscorewas 64.39±8.94; CommunicationSkillsScalemeanscorewas 95.09±16.15; EmotionalIntelligenceScalemeanscorewasdetermined as 100.21±20.88. Itwasdeterminedthattheempathictendencylevelandcommunicationskills of femalestudentswerehigherthanmalestudents (p<0.05). Inaddition, a statisticallysignificantcorrelationwasfoundbetweenstudents' EmpathicTendencyScaleandCommunicationSkillsScale (r=0.463; p<0.01) andEmotionalIntelligenceScale (r=0.327; p<0.01) scores. Conclusion:As a result, it can be saidthattheempathictendencies, communicationskillsandemotionalintelligencelevels of femalestudentsarehigher, and as theempathictendencylevel of thestudentsincreases, thecommunicationskillsandemotionalintelligencelevelscoresalsoincrease. Thefactthatthere is a positiverelationshipbetweenempathictendency, communicationskillsandemotionalintelligence has revealedtheimportance of 3 developingnursecandidates in terms of thenursingprofession, wherecommunication is soimportant as a care-orientedprofession.
