Examination of the knowledge and perception levels of senior nursing students regarding the ERAS protocol

This research was carried out in a descriptive and cross-sectional type, which is included in the quantitative research design, to determine nursing senior students' knowledge and perception levels about the accelerated recovery protocol after surgery. The population of the research, between March 2023 and May 2023, in the Atlas, where the Higher Education Council published university data in 2019, where located in Istanbul province, The sample of the study consisted of N=311 senior nursing students. The data in the research were obtained from the nursing senior students who accepted to participate in the research by taking participant information and consent form on the online platform via Google Forms by using the Questionnaire for Determining the Knowledge and Perception Levels of ERAS. The obtained resources were analyzed using the SPSS-22 for Windows package program. Numbers (n), percentile distribution (%), means (±standard deviation), and tables are used to express research data. Statistical analysis of research data is presented using t-test, ANOVA (Post Hoc Tukey and Games Howell) tests. It was determined that 74.6% (n=232) of the nursing students participating in the study were female, 94.5% (n=294) were not working, and 52.4% (n=163) had graduated from other high schools. It was observed that 51.4% of the participants (n=160) had partial knowledge of ERAS protocols, 40.9% (n=127) had no knowledge about ERAS protocols, and 7.7% (n=24) had knowledge about ERAS protocols. It has been determined that those who know ERAS protocols have taken this knowledge in the study of surgical diseases nursing and that they have gained this knowledge due to the application of ERAS protocols in their internship applications. As a result, it was determined that the level of knowledge and perception of the senior nursing students was low because they did not receive training on ERAS protocols in the course of surgical diseases nursing, did not read articles on this subject, and did not use ERAS protocol in their internship applications due to continuing traditional practices in surgical clinics.
