Abstract (EN)

Hezarfen Hüseyin, one of the significant intellectuals of the 17th century, is a prolific author who stands out with his historiography and statesmanship. As it can be understood from his nickname "Hezarfen" (polymath), he produced works in various fields of science. Despite playing an important role in the intellectual life of his era, neither the author himself nor his works are sufficiently known. It is essential to examine the travel notes, memoirs and various letters of European travelers and bureaucrats who came to Istanbul in the 17th century in order to shed light on some obscure aspects of his life. Because he developed very close relations with the Europeans in a way that was not uncommon in his time. Hezarfen, as one of the first Ottoman authors to use Western sources in his works, was interested in the histories, languages and cultures of foreign nations. The exchange of information between Hezarfen and Europeans such as Marsigli is a noteworthy indicator of the interaction between East and West in the 17th century, long before the Tanzimat. Contrary to today's common perception, this interaction is not only from West to East, but reciprocal. One reason why Hezarfen could not stand out as much as some of his contemporaries in the field of science may be that his works generally did not have sufficient originality. The author, who can be described as a typical Katip Çelebi follower in many ways, benefited greatly from the works of names such as Katip Çelebi, Gelibolulu Mustafa Ali, and incorporated sections from these works into his own works. In this respect, he can be considered as an author with a compiler/ encyclopedist character. Although this affected the originality of Hezarfen's texts, it does not mean that his works are academically worthless. Hezârfen's literary work Enis al-Arifîn is a politics and ethics book which summarizes Ali Çelebi's Hümayunname in its first chapter. On the other hand, his work Cami al-Hikayat, is a story anthology that mainly compiles Hümayunname stories. In the first part of our thesis, Hezarfen Hüseyin is introduced in detail by examining Western sources along with Turkish biographic and bibliographic sources. In the second part of our thesis, the above-mentioned two works of the author, which can be considered as the summary of Hümayunname, are examined, they are compared with Ali Çelebi's Hümayunname, and our considerations about the literary works are given. In the third and fourth chapters of our thesis, the manuscripts of the related works that we used are introduced from various aspects. Also, Latinized and the transcripted texts of both literary works are included.
