Design and characterization of carbide powder production furnace with hydrocarbon gases

Abstract (EN)

In this thesis, preheating furnace design with maximum internal temperature of 1200°C, 400x780x236mm dimensions and the temperature calibration of this furnace are characterized. Three elements are emphasized during the manufacturing process. The first is the selection of the resistance wire, the second is the determination of the power required to increase the internal temperature of the furnace to a maximum of 1200°C and the third is the determination of the furnace insulation. While carrying out these processes, a suitable design has been realized considering the minimum investment cost and minimum operating costs. The designs were made by using Solidworks program. 304L stainless steel furnace was produced by using the obtained designs. The furnace is made up of three phase and 60 ampere PID control unit. The inner chamber of the oven is also made of 1.5mm thick stainless steel. Alumina bricks and blankets were used as insulation. K type thermocouple is preferred for PID control. At the same time, an oven set consisting of hoses and gas valves for propylene gas and monometers were used in argon and reaction for atmosphere control. İn this way, design and manufacture of a furnace where temperature, pressure, atmosphere and time can be controlled. Pre-calibration tests were performed to determine the temperature of the furnace, to determine the internal temperature difference, to reach the reaction temperature and to determine the reaction temperatures and thus to determine the total duration of the experiment. The temperatures were measured and recorded using three different measurement systems in order to obtain simultaneous acquisition, comparison and time to reach the regimes. At the end of the measurements, it was determined that the furnace had reached the set temperature (550°C) in approximately 30 minutes. When this temperature is reached, it is determined that the inner chamber where the reaction will take place can be reached after approximately 1.5 hours and with a difference of 20 ° C (530 ° C). For this reason, it is determined by the calibration studies that the experiments should be done by adjusting the upper temperatures of the oven about 20°C for the determined reaction temperatures.
