Abstract (EN)

PREPARATION AND INVESTIGATION OF STRUCTURE, SURFACEPROPERTIES OF HYDROXYPROPYLCELLULOSE /POLY(ETHYLENIMINE) INTERPOLYMER COMPLEXES(M.Sc. Thesis)Gamze ŞENGÜLGAZI UNIVERSTYINSTITUTE OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGYDecember 2006ABSTRACTA serious blend films composed of hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC) andpoly(ethylene imine) (PEI) were prepared via casting from aqueous solutions. All the obtained blend films were optically clear to the naked eye. These blendfilms were characterized by tensile strength test, Attenuated Total ReflectanceFourier Transform Infrared (ATR-FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, NuclearMagnetic Resonance Spectroscopy (1H-NMR), Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM)and contact-angle measurements. ATR-FTIR study showed that there is theintermolecular hydrogen bonding interactions between the -OH groups of HPCand -NH groups of PEI. The blends exhibited good mechanical propertiescompared to those of homopolymers. In addition, annealing behavior of theseblends was studied by ATR-FTIR, AFM and water contact anglemeasurements. ATR-FTIR and water contact angle data indicated that the PEIcomponents with high chain flexibility of these blend systems were accumulatedor enriched mainly on the air-side surface and that on the other hand, HPCcomponents with low chain flexibility were oriented to the glass-side surface andthey inside of the films increasing with annealing temperature. The surfaceaccumulation behavior of the PEI components was further confirmed by AFMimage observation of the surface morphology of these blends.Science Code : 201.1.117Key Words : Interpolymer complex, Poly(ethylenimine),Hydroxypropylcellulose, H-BondingPage Number : 84Adviser : Associated Professor Dr. Tuncer ÇAYKARA
