Litreray discussions around the Hüseyi̇n Rahmi̇ Gürpinar's Cadı novel

Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar who published literary works in the eras of Servet-i Fünun, Fecr-i Ati, Milli Edebiyat and Cumhuriyet Edebiyatı, never adhered to any movements dominating Turkish literature and continued to write his novels according to the principle of "art for community" like Ahmed Midhat Efendi. Gürpınar was both appreciated and criticized occasionally because of this perception. The author, one of the most productive writers of Turkish literature, was mostly known with his novels and came up for various literary discussions on account of these novels. Discussions that have taken place around Cadı novel have a special importance because it has a content that reaches hundreds of pages. In this work it is mainly aimed to show what kind of criticisms were made against the author because of Cadı and how he and his supporters answered to the criticisms. The literary discussions, main issue of this work, started about Cadı. In these discussions Gürpınar was characterized as "proletariat" novelist by the criticizing writers in consideration of addressing to all the community. The author wrote two works for the purpose of responding the criticisms about himself. The main part of this work consists of study and Latin translation of the works named Zamane Mürekkidlerine Cevap: Cadı Çarpıyor ve Şekâvet-i Edebiyye written by Gürpınar in an effort to answer the criticisms of Cadı. Since it is inadequate just to look at the discussions from Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar's point of view, it is also evaluated three books, eleven articles written about the topic, one survey consisting of different writers opinions and a poem written by Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan. It is tried to show how the discussions continued and what kind of issues were discussed mostly with the assistance of quotations taken from the books and articles written for and against Gürpınar. Finally, it is mentioned an article of Ali Naci Karacan who made the heaviest criticism against Hüseyin Rahmi Gürpınar, called "Suya Sabuna Dokunmadan Bir Roman Münasebetiyle", published in İkdam newspaper and written for the purpose of apologizing 25 years later from the discussions were over.
