The Baqî' cemetery in the Prophet's Period

Following the Prophet Muhammed's migration to Madinah, he established a mosque and a cemetery on the same dates. The purpose of this study is to reveal this tomb's establishment's date, which is commonly known as Baqī' Cemetery, and all information about the cemetery. The names of the companions buried in the Baqī' Cemetery, the dates of companions' death, and the reasons for their death are among our findings. In our research, other cemeteries in Madinah were identified, thereby the importance of the Baqī' Cemetery was emphasized. On the other hand, within the processes after the death of the Prophet Muhammed, the data about the changes in the Baqī' Cemetery and the buried worshipers were not included in this study. Indeed, the Baqī' cemetery as an issue has not been studied in our country, and it has not been adequately studied in the Arab scientific world as well. Although there are studies on the subjects such as burial and cemeteries in the first period of Islamic society, the history of the Baqī' Cemetery as a whole is incomplete. Therefore, our study aims to be the first Turkish research on the relevant subject. Moreover, it aims to be a significant study in terms of being a scientific examination of the above-mentioned subject. In our thesis, material analysis and source criticism methods have been applied. Besides, the differences and contradictions between narrations were deeply examined. The fact that the data contained in the sources are narrations is always taken into consideration. Besides, narrations that do not have unity in themselves are opened to discussion. Within this framework, it is obtained that after the hijrah, the Prophet Muhammed has established a cemetery in the center of Madinah and Es'ad ibn Zurārah, from Ansar, is considered the first companion to be buried in this cemetery. During the time of the Prophet Muhammed, the names of the nineteen companions buried in the Baqī Cemetery have incidentally been noticed. On the other hand, information about many people whose names are unmentioned was obtained and there is unclear data about people whether they are buried in this cemetery or not. The presence of different cemeteries in various districts away from the center of Madinah indicates that Baqī' cemetery was not necessary for those people. In our study, it was not determined whether a tomb was established according to different tribes or genders.
