Abstract (EN)

Throughout history, encounters with religion and related phenomena have been prevalent. Skepticism regarding religion often centered on the institution of prophecy; however, much of the theological studies, particularly in Turkey, tends to focus on divinity, rather than prophethood. Specifically, research addressing criticisms of the Prophet Muhammad is scarce and insufficient. This study aims to bridge this gap by analyzing various criticisms directed towards him. The study is structured into five chapters: an introduction, three main sections, and a conclusion. The introductory chapter establishes the theoretical foundations. The subsequent chapter delves into the concept of prophecy. While the views from other religious traditions and philosophical perspectives are acknowledged, the emphasis will remain on the monotheistic religions. In addition to exploring the intellectual bases for prophethood, the study will discuss the standards that define prophethood, along with the roles, responsibilities, and personal attributes that characterize prophets. The analysis will also encompass the concepts of revelation and miracles. Through this comprehensive exploration, the research seeks to illuminate both the distinctions and commonalities in understanding prophethood, contributing to a more nuanced dialogue on the subject. In the third section, the study will explore the historical context, nature, and intensity of criticisms levied against the Prophet across different periods. It will identify the channels and categories under which these criticisms have emerged. The fourth chapter will categorize the criticisms outlined in the previous section, presenting them alongside counterarguments to facilitate a balanced assessment. Some unfounded claims will be included for their reference value, while those lacking substantive basis will be dismissed. To enhance comprehension of more abstract criticisms, specific examples frequently cited by critics will be analyzed where appropriate. The concluding section will synthesize the collected data, offering a comprehensive evaluation informed by the standards and definitions of prophecy discussed in the first chapter.
