Abstract (EN)

For sustainable development, it is of great importance to make improvements in energy efficiency in drinking water supply systems and to put these improvements into practice. The thesis investigates the issue of reducing energy consumption and increasing energy efficiency in water supply and distribution systems. In this context, four main topics are discussed: (i) Examining the methods of reducing energy consumption in water supply and distribution systems; (ii) Examining the methods used/that can be used to reduce energy consumption in Malatya province water supply and distribution systems and presenting suggestions that will provide energy savings; (iii) Determining the characteristics of SCADA systems used in water and sewage administrations of metropolitan municipalities in our country, examining SCADA activities, determining the gains obtained by using SCADA and presenting suggestions that will expand the scope; and (iv) Detailing the components of SCADA systems in water supply systems, performing cost analysis and determining the payback period. A detailed literature review was conducted on the methods of reducing energy consumption in drinking water supply and distribution systems, and these methods were classified and examined under seven categories. Studies carried out to reduce energy consumption and increase energy efficiency in Malatya province drinking water supply systems were determined and suggestions presented for reducing energy consumption. The characteristics of SCADA systems used in water and sewerage administrations of metropolitan municipalities in our country were explained, SCADA activities examined and the gains obtained by using SCADA determined. In addition, a sample water supply and distribution system in the Central Anatolia Region was examined, the SCADA components of the system detailed, cost analysis performed and the payback period determined. It was observed that the payback period of the investment costs of SCADA application in the examined water supply and distribution system was quite short (5.6 months). The studies carried out in this thesis is expected to contribute to the implementation and dissemination of energy efficiency measures in urban water supply systems in our country.
