Abstract (EN)
The number of flights at airports with dense human populations has increased significantly with the development of the aviation sector. In parallel with the number of flights, the number of ground handling support provided for each flight also increases. This support is provided by internal combustion engine vehicles operating on fossil fuels. For this reason, ground handling vehicles are a part of the carbon emission values at airports.s In this thesis, fossil fuel-powered internal combustion engine ground handling vehicles belonging to the TGS and HAVAŞ fleets used for ground handling support at Esenboğa Airport were examined. The carbon dioxide equivalent amounts of carbon dioxide gas, methane and nitrous oxide gases released into the air during each flight supported by these vehicles and the total annual flight support were calculated using Tier-1 and Tier-2 methods. The cost of using electrical energy instead of diesel fuel used together with gas emissions was also calculated. In this thesis, it was calculated that internal combustion engine ground handling vehicles serving at Esenboğa Airport emitted a total of 14056,5 tons of CO2, 10751,4 tons of CO, 277,8 tons of N2O and 2,73 tons of CH4 greenhouse gases into the air in 1 year. It was calculated that 24130460 TL would be saved annually if electricity was used instead of diesel fuel.
