Reading the news about between the power and the opposition within the context of center-periphery conflict

The purpose of this study is to read the news about between the power and the opposition within the context of center- periphery conflict. In this regard, the polemics between CHP and AKP have been analysed within the context of center-periphery conflict. Cumhuriyet, Hürriyet, Vatan, Star, Yenişafak ve Zaman newspapers have been analysed within the scope of the study. The newspapers mentioned above have been analysed according to critical discourse analysis method. In the first chapter, the study has been focused on the center- periphery conflict which is a determinant in Turkish Politics. In this regard, modernisation and westernisation have been analysed. In the Study, the role of press on the modernisation of Ottoman-Turkey has been mentioned. In this regard, in the course of modernisation importance of press has been highlighted. In the second chapter, newspapers chosen among the Turkish Press have been analysed according to critical discourse analysis method. The findings have been evaluated within the context of contextual part which is mentioned in the first part. In this regard, it has been examined how the power- opposition polemics on the newspapers have been reported as news. In the news reported in six different ideological referenced newspapers, it has seen that polemics which allow "center-periphery conflict reading" existed between CHP and AKP. Cumhuriyet adopted a discourse opposite to power. Hurriyet and Vatan have reproduced the discorse of power and opposition. As for Yenişafak, Star and Zaman they showed a tendency supporting the discourses of the power. As a consequence, considering the current politics, polemics issues between CHP and AKP allow center-periphery conflict reading. Considering the discourses on the examined newspapers, it is possible to say center-periphery conflict continues. Key Words: Power, opposition, center, periphery, modernization, westernization, press.
