Abstract (EN)
Recently, the need to overcome the flood risks has gained more attention around the world. One of the practical solutions is the implementation of pervious pavement. Porous asphalt is a type of pavement with an open grade gradation mixed with a polymer-modified binder that contains higher air voids than conventional asphalt pavements after compression, which allows precipitation waters from the pavement surface to infiltrate into the substrates. Porous asphalt, helps to reduce the noise problem by ensuring that most of the noise caused by the friction between the wheel and the pavement surface is absorbed by the surface, due to its high void. In addition, since the pavement surface consists of coarse aggregates depending on the aggregate gradation used, it improves driving safety by increasing the skid resistance between the wheel and surface, which is one of the essential problems, especially in rainy weather. This thesis investigated the applicability of porous asphalt pavement using bitumen with 50/70 penetration, different polymers (SBS and Elvaloy), organic warm mix asphalt (WMA) additive (Sasobit), and two different aggregate types (Limestone and Basalt). Preliminary design studies determined grading types and aimed to determine the optimum bitumen ratio used in the mixture depending on the particle loss test result and Marshall design data. Compliance with the specification was checked by evaluating the properties of the designed samples, such as particle loss, Marshall stability, indirect tensile strength, permeability, and bitumen draindown. The results showed that the mixtures prepared with base bitumen and WMA additive Sasobit did not meet the porous asphalt specification limits, while the mixtures prepared with polymer-modified bitumen complied with the current specification. In addition, mixtures prepared with a basalt-limestone aggregate combination showed better results than mixtures prepared using only limestone.
