A research into 7th grade students' reading comprehesion education (The sample of Gebze township)

Reading is one of the basic means of learning . In this research, the education of reading and understanding according to the new curriculum of Turkish language course has been carried out. To determine the difference between the level of understanding a text planned according to the new curriculum and the level of understanding self-reading, an experimental method with pre-test and post- test control groups has been used. The research is done with the 7th grade students of Gebze Fevzi Çakmak Primary School on the spring term in 2008-2009 academic year. There are 4 classes and 134 students in total. Two groups of 40 each that have no important difference in common according to the pre-test results of their level of understanding form the pattern of the study. One of the two groups is determined as a control group and the other as neutral. To get data for the research, four texts and their reading comprehension plans published by four different press to be read in that education period have been choosed coincidentally. The publishing houses and the texts are : Koza Yayınları, ?Kitap Saygısı?; MEB Yayınları, ?Atatürk ve Türk Tiyatrosu?; Pasifik Yayınları, ?Nazar Boncuğu?; Harf Eğitim Yayınları, ?Mor Salkımlı Ev?. These texts are processed on time with the experimental group according to the lesson plan in the Teacher?s Book. They are not intervened out of the fact that they are given the words which they don?t know their meaning.At the end of the experiments, reading comprehension tests belong to each texts are applied to the both group to determine the understanding level of these texts. The data?s been analyzed with SPSS 11.5 program. It?s been benefitted from the `t? test to find out the sub-problems and show the equivalence of the groups.At the end of the research, ıt?s shown that there is a big difference on reading comprehension achievement test of three texts between pre-test and post-test marks of the experimental group. However; the comparison of post tests of the experimental and control groups shows that there is not an important difference between them. So it can be said that the group that applied with reading comprehension plans does not have a positive comprehension difference with the other group reading (silent reading) themselves.Key words: reading, reading comprehension, reading comprehension plan of the new curriculum for Turkısh course, self-reading (silent reading).
