Research on English questions in level determination exam applied to 7th-grade students at primary schools according to some variants

In this study, Level Determination Exam applied to primary schools in 2008-2009 school year was investigated according to measurement and evaluation principles in English teaching in relation with evaluation and measurement of reliability and validity of Primary School 7th grade English exam questions.In the study, available exam types, particularly multiple choice tests, used according to evaluation and measurement principles in English teaching and English program applied in primary schools were investigated in detail; English questions used in Level Determination Exam were investigated one by one in terms of multiple choice test type, general measurement and evaluation principles and English teaching program and were assessed according to validity and reliability levels. The findings of the study are as following:1.Exam questions are, in general, suitable for multiple choice test principles; however, when investigated on the basis of questions one by one, it is seen that each question cannot be related to these basic principles.2.Questions were not prepared in a certain order.3.Questions are not in exact accordance with Primary School 7th Grade English Curriculum. When questions and program were compared, it was observed that some subjects, even the most important ones, were ignored through the test.4.It is seen that questions do not include all curriculum subjects. Acquisitions clearly stated within the program were not reflected to questions. The subjects of the previous year were not used.5.Most of the test questions are based on visual themes. In 12 questions, sweeping visual elements were used.6.In order to solve the questions, image interpretation and test analysis techniques are helpful rather than knowing English.7.It was seen that English questions used in the test are not in accordance with the goals to be measured.
