The relationship between bullying behaviour and parental attitudes of secondary school students

It is thought that bullying bahaviour is the one type of violence acts that take place in school and it effects the education. According to Dan Olweus, ?Bullying poisons the educational environment and affects the learning of every child. Bullying can affect the climate of the school in social ways. It can affect learning, cause fear, and even lead to anti-social behavior .This anti-social behavior can reveal itself in physical intimidation, higher absence rates, revenge seeking.The data of study was collected using Bullying Behaviour Scale and Parental Attitudes Scale. Five hundred ninety four students from 6th grade, 7th grade and eight grade asked to take part to study. All students were chosen from eight different secondary schools that exist in Odunpazarı town of Eskisehir city.The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between bullying behaviour (physical, verbal, social, teasing) and parental attitudes (strictness/supervision, acceptance/involvement, psychological autonomy) of secondary school students.The data collected was then analysed by SPSS-10.0 statistical analysis software. For bilateral comparisons t-test and for multiplet comparisons unilateral variance analyse (ANOVA) were performed. In order to reveal which bilateral groups resulted in the significant differences found by ANOVA analysis, Tukey B (Cramer) and Fisher LSD Post-Hoc tests were used while the relation between parenting styles, bullying behaviour. At first, bullying behaviour and parental attitudes were tested to look if there was significant difference between the students according to their gender, age, grade, family income, family maritual status, parent educational level. After testing, a significant relationship was found between bullying behaviour and parental attitudes.Key words: Bullying behaviour, parental attitudes, school bullying
