Evaluation of self-assessment applications in elementary schools according to manager and teacher opinions (Ankara province - Çankaya district sample)

Purpose of this research is the evaluation of the situation of ?institutional self-assessment? in elementary schools which has almost become compulsory pursuing the spread of Total Quality Management according to manager and teacher opinions.To this purpose, a survey form is applied to 339 teachers and 57 managers serving in public elementary schools of Ankara province Çankaya district. The survey is composed of three sections as personal information, Total Quality Management System of the school and self- assessment applications. Self- assessment applications section is composed of seven sub dimensions as ?Leadership; Strategic Planning; Student, Stakeholder and Market Focus; Measurement, Analysis and Knowledge Management; Faculty and Staff Focus; Process Management; Organizational Performance Results? and a total of 81 items.Chi-Square Test is employed in the analysis of data for significant difference between frequencies and percent values, replies of managers and teachers.According to the findings of research, all of the teachers and managers have not been trained concerning any quality management model and the schools don?t have any quality management programme. Despite this, the findings demonstrate that self-assessment is applied in majority except six items concerning all sub dimensions.Furthermore, significant differences have been found between the teacher and manager opinions in ?Leadership; Student, Stakeholder and Market Focus; Faculty and Staff Focus; Process Management; Organizational Performance Results? sub dimensions.Relevant with the findings and results, suggestions are presented related to self-assessment studies to be applied in schools and future scientific researches.Key Words: Self-assessment, self-assessment in elementary schools, Total Quality Management, Total Quality Management in education, quality award models.
