The effect of problem based learning applications on learning outcomes of the students in primary education life studies course

Abstract (EN)

The aim of this study is to identify the effectiveness of Problem Based Learning applications on learning outcomes of the students, in Life Studies course.The research was conducted with 57 thirth grade students from two different public schools during 2009-2010 academic years. The experiment group consists 33 students and the control group consists 24 students. Problem Based Learning method was implemented for the experiment group and with the control group, existing Curriculum of the Life Studies Course was implemented.Qualitative and quantitative research methods have been used together. In quantitative research method, pretest-posttest control group experimental model has been used. Quantitative research data were collected by Life Studies Course Achievement Test and Portfolio Evaluation Form. Qualitative research data were collected by using observation and interview forms.From the results of quantitative research data; it can be seen from the achievement test and portfolio scores, Problem Based Learning method is more effective on the academic achievement of the students in the Life Studies Course.The results of interview form data indicates that, the students were aware of the objectives of Problem Based Learning method, they adopted the method and had positive opinions about the method.From the observation form data; the results about dimensions of physical environment of the classroom, noise in the classroom, active participation, effective communication and interaction, being respectful of group members to each other, sharing information, source and task, taking responsibility and making effort have been obtained. At the role of the students, the results about dimensions of learning by doing, relevance of prior learnings and new learnings, making researchs, using source, using higher-order thinking skills have been obtained.Key Words: problem based learning, life sciences course, academic achievement, portfolio.
